Lauryn Hill and De La Soul are among those being recognized by the Recording Academy this year for their contributions to Hip Hop and music.

On Wednesday (March 20), the organization announced that The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998) and 3 Feet High and Rising (1989) will be inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 2024 alongside classics by Donna Summer, Wanda Jackson and more.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Novo Theater in Los Angeles, CA on May 21.

“We’re proud to unveil the diverse mix of recordings entering the Grammy Hall Of Fame in its 50th year,” Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. shared.

“The music showcased here has played a pivotal role in shaping our cultural landscape, and it’s a true honor to recognize these albums and recordings, along with the profound influence each has had on music and beyond.”

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 tally upon its release and went on to win five Grammy Awards: Best New Artist, Best R&B Song, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and Best R&B Album.

3 Feet High and Rising, on the other hand, didn’t receive the same amount of commercial shine when it first dropped but has since been credited for giving art rap and progressive Hip Hop a boost like no other body of work before it. In 2010, the Library of Congress added the LP to the National Recording Registry on the basis of it being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

In related news, A Tribe Called Quest, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey and Eric B & Rakim are among this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees.

The full list of artists nominated this year, which totals 15, was announced last month on the organization’s website and across its social channels. Blige, A Tribe Called Quest and Eric B & Rakim having all been nominated previously and returning to ballot once again.

Midnight Marauders was released on November 9, 1993. Three decades later, its impact persists and continues to inspire younger generations within the culture and beyond. To celebrate the album’s enduring presence, beatmaker and wordsmith Q-Tip has announced a new merchandise line that is now available on the ATCQ website.

The new collection comprises jackets, sweatshirts, t-shirts, caps and tapestries, among other items.

Chuck D of Public Enemy, Pharoah Monch of Organized Konfusion, Statik Selektah, Kid Capri and DJ Khalil were some of the Hip Hop OGs who hopped in the comment section of the Abstract’s Instagram post to show some love, which you can check out below.

A Tribe Called Quest’s significance is disputed by few, which is why the four-piece not receiving their due credit rubs a lot of people the wrong way. To this point, Consequence wasn’t happy when they were snubbed by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year.

The 2023 inductees were announced in early May, with the iconic rap entity not making the cut for a second year running. Cons, a longtime Tribe affiliate, shared his unfiltered feelings about the omission during an interview with TMZ.

“What we not gon’ do is keep subjugating that name, A Tribe Called Quest, to a white popularity contest, and having them in there as the token n-ggas pick,” he said. “We gon’ stop that.”

Missy Elliott, A Tribe Called Quest Nominated for 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Missy Elliott and A Tribe Called Quest are in this year’s class of nominees up for induction into the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class.

On Wednesday (Feb. 1), the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame revealed their list of nominees for the coveted honor. Hip-hop is represented, with Missy Elliott and Tribe being in a group that includes Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against The Machine, Soundgarden, The Spinners, The White Stripes and Warren Zevon.

This is Missy’s first time on the ballot and her first year of eligibility. This is A Tribe Called Quest’s second time making the ballot after first making the list in 2022 but failing to get voted in.

“This remarkable list of nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honors and celebrates,” said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “These artists have created their own sounds that have impacted generations and influenced countless others that have followed in their footsteps.”

Missy, a four-time Grammy-award winner, has enjoyed an illustrious career that has seen her break the mold for female rappers while excelling in rapping, songwriting, producing and singing. A Tribe Called Quest are cited at one of the best hip-hop groups of all time, with multiple critically acclaimed albums and undeniable influence. Fans can cast their vote at vote.rockhall.com.

Missy and ATCQ’s induction would mark the 11th and 12th rap acts to be allowed entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame including Jay-Z, 2Pac, LL Cool, The Notorious B.I.G. and others. Eminem made the final cut last year, becoming the most recent rapper to be recognized. 2023 inductees will be announced in May, with the ceremony taking place this fall.

Missy Elliott has been getting her flowers a lot recently. In 2019, she was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, joining Jay-Z, Jermaine Dupri and The Neptunes as the only hip-hop artists to receive the honor. In 2021, she was honored with a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame.
