Missy Elliott, A Tribe Called Quest Nominated for 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Missy Elliott and A Tribe Called Quest are in this year’s class of nominees up for induction into the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class.

On Wednesday (Feb. 1), the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame revealed their list of nominees for the coveted honor. Hip-hop is represented, with Missy Elliott and Tribe being in a group that includes Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against The Machine, Soundgarden, The Spinners, The White Stripes and Warren Zevon.

This is Missy’s first time on the ballot and her first year of eligibility. This is A Tribe Called Quest’s second time making the ballot after first making the list in 2022 but failing to get voted in.

“This remarkable list of nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honors and celebrates,” said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “These artists have created their own sounds that have impacted generations and influenced countless others that have followed in their footsteps.”

Missy, a four-time Grammy-award winner, has enjoyed an illustrious career that has seen her break the mold for female rappers while excelling in rapping, songwriting, producing and singing. A Tribe Called Quest are cited at one of the best hip-hop groups of all time, with multiple critically acclaimed albums and undeniable influence. Fans can cast their vote at vote.rockhall.com.

Missy and ATCQ’s induction would mark the 11th and 12th rap acts to be allowed entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame including Jay-Z, 2Pac, LL Cool, The Notorious B.I.G. and others. Eminem made the final cut last year, becoming the most recent rapper to be recognized. 2023 inductees will be announced in May, with the ceremony taking place this fall.

Missy Elliott has been getting her flowers a lot recently. In 2019, she was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, joining Jay-Z, Jermaine Dupri and The Neptunes as the only hip-hop artists to receive the honor. In 2021, she was honored with a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Dr. Dre Strikes $200M-Plus Deal To Sell Music Catalog Assets

According to Billboard, the legendary producer is closing in on two separate deals to offload a share of music income streams and other assets to Shamrock Holdings and Universal Music Group.

The deals, which were shopped by Dre’s longtime attorney Peter Paterno, were being pitched for a combined sum of $250 million. While the final sale price won’t quite be that high, a source close to the rap mogul said the figure will still be “well above $200 million.”

The assets, which net almost $10 million in annual income, include artist royalties from two of Dr. Dre’s solo albums and his share of N.W.A artist royalties; his producer royalties; and the songwriter’s share of his song catalog where he doesn’t own publishing, which may include tracks from blockbuster 1992 debut LP The Chronic.

These account for between 75 and 90 percent of the package’s revenue and is likely being acquired by Shamrock. UMG is said to be purchasing the remaining 10 to 25 percent generated by owned assets, including the master recording of The Chronic, which is due to be transferred from Death Row Records to Dre in August.

UMG’s portion also includes Dre’s share of Kendrick Lamar’s releases through Aftermath’s joint deal with Interscope and Top Dawg Entertainment, and possibly some publishing, although it’s unclear which portion of his catalog that would include.

The bundle of assets doesn’t, however, include his ownership stake in Aftermath, which he founded in 1996 and co-owns with UMG’s Interscope.

The deal continues a recent trend of Hip Hop stars making major bank from their music rights. Last year, Future sold his publishing catalog between 2004 and 2020 to Influence Media Partners for an eight-figure sum.

That deal included 612 songs in total, including hits like “Life Is Good” and “Jumpman” with Drake, “King’s Dead” with Kendrick Lamar, “Selfish” with Rihanna, “Low Life” with The Weeknd and “Mask Off.”

Before that, Public Enemy’s Chuck D sold his full songwriter’s share of royalties and half of his “copyright interest” as the publisher to Reach Music.

“Doing this deal was the right timing for a forward and logical evolution of [their] business together in an ever-changing industry,” Chuck told Rolling Stone of the deal.

‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ rapper Coolio dead at age 59

Tonight (Sept. 28), TMZ has reported that West Coast rapper Coolio has died at the age of 59.

The “Gangsta’s Paradise” artist’s manager Jarez reportedly told the Hollywood gossip site that Coolio was visiting a friend at a home in Los Angeles when he passed. The rapper allegedly went into his friend’s bathroom, but never came out. Paramedics were called around 4 p.m., but Coolio was pronounced dead at the scene. Jarez reportedly said the veteran rhymer died of cardiac arrest, although an official cause of death has yet to be determined.

XXL has reached out to Jarez for further confirmation.

Coolio, born Artis Leon Ivey Jr, had major mainstream success in the 1990s, primarily with his 1995 hit single “Gangsta’s Paradise.” The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart the same year it was released. “Gangsta’s Paradise” earned further widespread acclaim after being the main song featured in the 1995 film Dangerous Minds starring Michelle Pfeiffer. The track won Coolio a Grammy award for Best Rap Solo Performance. It has since been certified double-platinum in the U.S., and also sold millions of additional units worldwide.

The song was the title track to Coolio’s 1995 breakthrough album, Gangsta’s Paradise, which also features two other successful singles: “1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New)” and “Too Hot,” the latter of which features J.T. Taylor of Kool & the Gang on the hook. Gangsta’s Paradise is also certified double-platinum, with over two million units sold in the U.S. alone.

The MC released a total of eight studio albums, beginning with It Takes a Thief in 1994, and ending with what would be his final LP, From the Bottom 2 the Top, in 2009.

Outside of music, Coolio appeared as an actor in various films, including the 1997 adaptation of Batman & Robin. He also made cameos in TV shows Sabrina The Teenage Witch, The Nanny, Malcolm & Eddie and more.

New Orleans, LA – Wyclef Jean was among the many performers at the 2022 Essence Fest in New Orleans on Friday night (July 1). During his set, Wyclef brought out his fellow Fugee Lauryn Hill much to the surprise of the audience.

The two longtime collaborators did a live rendition of “Killing Me Softly” from the group’s critically acclaimed sophomore album The Score as well as “Ready Or Not,” “How Many Mics” and “Fu-Gee-La.” Prior to the performance, HipHopDX spoke to Wyclef who ensured his fans his Essence Fest appearance would be “historical” — and he delivered.

The performance comes six months after the Fugees canceled The Scores‘s 25th anniversary reunion tour due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“We anticipate and understand disappointment but our anniversary tour will not be able to happen,” the group explained at the time. “The continued Covid pandemic has made touring conditions difficult, and we want to make sure we keep our fans and ourselves healthy and safe. An idea sparked to honor and celebrate this 25th anniversary of The Score, but we see now it may not currently be our time for revisiting this past work.”

The fact Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras were able to come together for a show in New York City prior to the cancelation was a miracle in itself. Shortly after The Score was release, the trio had a terrible falling out and it looked like they’d never share a stage again. Wyclef and Hill admittedly had an affair while he was married to designer Marie Claudinette. According to Wyclef’s autobiography Purpose, Hill also lied about the paternity of her son Zion and led him to think the child was his, when it reality the baby belonged to Bob Marley’s son Rohan.

Rolling Stone’s Top 200 List Of Greatest Hip-Hop Albums Cause Confusion

On June 7, Rolling Stone released its ranking of the 200 Greatest Hip Hop Albums of All Time and many fans oppose the list.

Since Hip-Hop is such a broad genre, the popular entertainment news publication limited the list to English language hip-hop only. They also said in cases of repeated albums from legendary catalogs such as OutKast or A Tribe Called Quest, we tended to go with the latter option.

Although many fans disagree with the order and the selections of the albums, Rolling Stone did attempt to cover the entire evolution of the hip-hop genre. The committee selected projects from the early stages of rap such as albums from Public Enemy, De La Soul, Eric B. and Rakim. It also captures records from the ’90s and ‘2000s with acts like Tupac, Biggie, Jay-Z, Nas, Lil Wayne, and Kanye West. The list also mentions tons of new era acts Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Polo G, Travis Scott, Mac Miller, and more.
